World’s First Pediatric Bilateral Hand Transplant

Eight year old Zion Harvey, an energetic and resilient young man with an infectious personality, lost both his hands and feet when they had to be amputated after contracting a life-threatening bloodstream infection that led to multi-system organ failure at the age of 2. At the age of 4, after two years on dialysis, he received a kidney from his mother. In April 2015, Zion was listed for a bilateral hand transplant and miraculously, only 3 months later, a gracious donor family made the decision to donate their child’s hands to another child in need of a hand transplant. A few weeks ago, Zion had his surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and became the first pediatric to receive a bilateral hand transplant.
