World’s First Pediatric Bilateral Hand Transplant

Posted by:

Eight year old Zion Harvey, an energetic and resilient young man with an infectious personality, lost both his hands and feet when they had to be amputated after contracting a life-threatening bloodstream infection that led to multi-system organ failure at the age of 2. At the age of 4, after two years on dialysis, he received a kidney from his mother. In April 2015, Zion was listed for a bilateral hand transplant and miraculously, only 3 months later, a gracious donor family made the decision to donate their child’s hands to another child in need of a hand transplant. A few weeks ago, Zion had his surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and became the first pediatric to receive a bilateral hand transplant.

Zion’s story, cannot be shared more effectively than through this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFyP_R6wPr8&feature=youtu.be
