Woman Receives Bionic Eye Transplant

A 72-year old Honolulu woman is the first woman in the Asia-Pacific region to receive a bionic eye transplant. The product used is called Argus® II Regional Prosthesis System. It is intended to provide electrical stimulation of the retina to induce visual perception in blind patients. It is indicated for use in patients with severe to profound retinitis pigmentosa. This implant would not work for someone who was blind from birth.
