US begins organ transplants from living donors with HIV

WASHINGTON (AP) — Surgeons in Baltimore have performed what’s thought to be the world’s first kidney transplant from a living donor with HIV, a milestone for patients with the virus who need a new organ — and one that could free up space on the transplant waiting list for everyone.

Impact of Using HIV Positive Transplants

Since the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act (the HOPE Act) passed in 2013, there have been no known cases of a transplant from a positive donor.

Recently, a study by Dr. Emily Blumberg and her team published in the American Journal of Transplantation reviewed 578 medical record of deaths occurring at six large Philadelphia HIV clinics.
