First Living Organ Donor to be Appointed as President of OPTN

Betsy J. Walsh (’94), vice president and deputy general counsel for Novant Health, Inc., has been elected president of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network / United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN / UNOS) board of directors.

Ms. Walsh becomes the first non-clinical person elected to president of the OPTN, and she is the first living organ donor in this position. Ms. Walsh donated a kidney to her sister. In her role, Ms. Walsh is responsible for strategic planning, increasing number of transplants, promoting patient safety, ensuring those in need have equitable access to transplantation, and improving outcomes for living donors, transplant patients, and those in need of a transplant.
