Breakthrough increases in organ donation and transplantation in the United States have occurred since the first Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative got underway in September 2003. New monthly donation and transplant records have been consistently achieved over the 3-year collaborative experience.
A concentrated effort led by representatives of many organizations in the donation and transplant community has succeeded in creating a vehicle that ensures a continued national commitment to eliminate deaths on transplant wait lists!
In January 2006, a Steering Committee was formed to bring this dream into reality. On June 13, 2006, the Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance was officially incorporated for the specific purpose of conducting educational activities related to, and accelerating the success of the organ donation and transplantation collaboratives. Non-profit designation has been requested as per Section 501C(3) of the IRS Code.
The Alliance leadership will come from those organizations critical to the organ donation and transplant process. As an independent organization, the Alliance can effectively and efficiently partner with professional organizations and the U.S. government to achieve the shared vision of eliminating deaths on the national transplant wait lists!
